Malvern College 1st XV 19, Bloxham School 1st XV 34

Following a successful pre-season, Bloxham got the season proper off to a strong start with a hard fought but ultimately convincing win at Malvern. The lead changed hands on several occasions in an entertaining though error-strewn game, with Bloxham reaching half-time 10-5 ahead thanks to an opportunistic try from scrum half Harry Schnurr, converted by Ben England, who had opened the scoring with a penalty kick. Malvern’s first half came from a long-range backs’ try, and their three quarters remaining their main attacking threat throughout the game.

After the interval a try in the corner from Ben Ash, converted by England, stretched the away side’s advantage to 17-5 before Malvern hit back with two converted tries of their own to take a 19-17 lead. By this stage, however, Bloxham’s pack was starting to get on top in the loose, with a series of powerful ‘pick and go’ drives from the likes of Alex Myles and Felix Hunt making vital yards and tiring the Malvern defence. A try from left wing Tom Bridge after robbing his opposite number was followed by further scores for Hunt and stand-in skipper Jonny Sealey. 1st XV captain Stan Deeley came on for the second half and marshalled his forwards well, while Ben England, who contributed 9 points and controlled matters in midfield, was named Bloxham’s man of the match. As always with the first game of the season, there is plenty for the coach to work on, notably the lineout and some of the alignment in defence, but this was an encouraging start for a young side.
